Navy leadership acknowledges mental health crisis aboard aircraft carrier

Senior US Navy officials have admitted that sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln suffered serious mental health problems during a long deployment. The ship was away for nearly nine months. More than 200 family members met with acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao in San Diego to share their concerns. Families also joined a virtual meeting, where they spoke about exhaustion, safety, and difficulty staying in contact with their relatives. Vice Admiral Joseph Cahill recognised the pressure on sailors and their families. During the deployment, a sailor tried to jump off the ship, but crew members stopped them. The ship then made an announcement to inform everyone on board. One family member said they noticed signs of struggle in messages from their relative on the ship.
