Muslim mayor attends 9/11 memorial despite opposition calls

New York City's first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony on September 9, 2026. Around 110,000 people had signed a petition asking him to stay away. Some victims' families and conservative critics also opposed his attendance.

Before the ceremony, Mamdani visited several firehouses that lost firefighters in the 2001 attacks. He met with survivors, families, and people who still have health problems because of the attacks.

Mamdani also announced a new memorial for 9/11 victims near police headquarters. His office released documents about air quality close to ground zero after the attacks. He signed executive orders to support victims and their families.
