Gardening experts have been sharing advice on how homeowners can create professional-looking checkerboard patterns on their lawns using a standard mower.

The technique, which is popular among golf course managers, involves mowing across the whole lawn in one direction, then turning 90 degrees and repeating the process. Where the two directions cross, the grass forms a square pattern. The effect works because the mower bends the grass blades in different directions, catching light differently.

The pattern can look faint at first but becomes clearer as the grass grows. Homeowners need to mow or roll the lawn regularly to keep the design visible. A special striping roller tool can also help by pressing the blades down more firmly. Experts recommend cutting grass at a height of 5 to 10 centimetres during summer to avoid browning.
