Mount Anak Krakatau eruption halts flights at Jakarta airport

Indonesia's main international airport near Jakarta suspended flights on Sunday after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted. The airport cancelled 209 flights because volcanic ash spread into the airspace above. More than 22,000 passengers were affected. The volcano, which sits in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, first erupted late Friday night. It erupted twice more on Sunday morning, producing lava fountains and loud explosions. Flights to and from Singapore, Sydney, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur were among those stopped. Suspensions lasted until 13:30 local time. Ash also fell across parts of Sumatra and Java. Health officials told residents to stay inside and wear face masks, as ash can harm the lungs, eyes, and skin. No tsunami warning was issued.
