MapQuest becomes top downloaded app after refusing lake name change

MapQuest refused on August 27 to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" after President Trump signed an order telling federal agencies to use the new name. The company posted "We're not changing it" on social media. Downloads of its app then jumped to about 50 times the normal level. By Monday morning, MapQuest was the top navigation app on the US Apple App Store and fourth among all non-gaming apps. In Canada, it reached second place overall by Sunday evening. Other mapping services, including Google Maps and Apple Maps, had already renamed the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America after a similar earlier order. The name change was part of a trade dispute in which the US and Canada placed 50% tariffs on each other's goods. As of Tuesday, Apple Maps still showed Lake Ontario under its original name.
