Man pleads guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday to federal charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

Mangione shot Thompson in the back outside a hotel in Manhattan on the morning of December 4. He had travelled to New York specifically to kill him. Before the attack, he sent an email to UnitedHealthcare pretending to be an investor. This gave him information about a conference Thompson would attend.

He pleaded guilty to two charges related to stalking that resulted in death. In court, he said he understood his actions were illegal and would cause fear of serious harm. He told the court he was motivated by back pain and bad experiences with the healthcare system. Thompson's wife and mother were present during the hearing.
