Man attacks Berlin Pride event with van and knife, killed by police

A man drove a minivan into a crowd near Berlin's Pride festival on Saturday night, killing one person and injuring at least 29 others. The attack happened close to the Brandenburg Gate at around 10pm. After hitting people with the vehicle, the attacker got out and stabbed several people with a machete. Police identified him as Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese background. He was known to police and had tried to join the Islamic State group. German authorities have classified the attack as Islamist terrorism. On Sunday, police shot and killed Ballout after he moved toward officers with a knife. The festival's closing party was cancelled following the attack. Germany has since raised its national security threat level because officials are worried about copycat attacks.
