Major publications test and recommend top paper shredder models for consumers

Two major publications have tested dozens of paper shredders to help people choose the best model for their needs. The New York Times ran more than 5,000 sheets of paper through 24 different machines, along with staples, CDs, and credit cards. Tech Gear Lab tested 15 models from several brands, including Aurora and Amazon Basics.

The New York Times recommends the Staples 12-Sheet Micro-Cut Shredder for most home and office users. For people who need to destroy large amounts of sensitive documents, it suggests the Aurora AU120MA, which can handle 120 sheets at once. However, the Aurora cannot shred CDs. Tech Gear Lab's top budget pick is the Amazon Basics 8-Sheet Micro Cut, though it stops after five minutes because it overheats.
