Luigi Mangione pleads not guilty to UnitedHealthcare CEO killing

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded not guilty on December 23 to charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He entered not guilty pleas in both federal and New York state courts. Mangione is accused of shooting Thompson in Manhattan earlier in 2024. Before the hearing, some reports suggested his lawyers were thinking about a guilty plea. This could have helped them challenge the state charges using double jeopardy rules. However, Mangione did not follow that strategy. Because he has pleaded not guilty, the case will now go to trial. He is currently being held at a detention centre in Brooklyn. The federal charges against him carry the possibility of the death penalty.
