Luigi Mangione plea negotiations in federal murder case end without agreement

Plea talks between Luigi Mangione's lawyers and federal prosecutors in New York have broken down without a deal. Mangione is accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel in December 2024. Thompson was 50 years old. Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both state and federal cases. The two sides met before a court hearing on July 6, 2026, but could not reach an agreement. Another federal hearing is set for August 14, 2026. The state trial is due to start on September 8, 2026, and the federal trial could begin in early 2027. Neither the U.S. Attorney's office nor the Manhattan District Attorney would comment on the negotiations.
