Large numbers of fish and eels killed in River Pool pollution incident

Large numbers of fish died in the River Pool near Beckenham, South London, over the weekend of 28-29 June 2026. Dead fish were first spotted in Cator Park on Sunday afternoon, and the damage extended roughly three kilometres downstream to where the river meets the Ravensbourne.

Several species were killed, including European eels, which are critically endangered. Their numbers have fallen by up to 95 percent since the 1980s. Other species affected included chub, roach, and stone loach.

The Environment Agency and Thames Water are investigating the cause, which has not yet been identified. Thames Water placed aeration equipment in the river to raise oxygen levels in the water. Drinking water supplies have not been affected. Residents have been told to keep themselves and their animals away from the affected stretch.
