King Charles opens Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Tardis entrance

King Charles III and Queen Camilla stepped out of a Tardis to open the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday evening. The Tardis is the time machine from the British television show Doctor Who. Charles formally opened the Games as head of the Commonwealth. Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy was there to welcome the royal couple after they appeared. The ceremony also featured a mechanical Loch Ness monster, which played the opening notes of Flower of Scotland. Prime Minister Andy Burnham attended the event. The show included references to Glasgow's famous shipyards and carried the message "People make Glasgow." Glasgow agreed to host the Games after the original host city pulled out due to financial problems.
