Judge declares mistrial in Massachusetts mother murder case

A judge in Massachusetts declared a mistrial in the murder case against Lindsay Clancy in 2024. Jurors could not agree on a verdict after five weeks of trial. Clancy was charged with killing her three children in 2023. The children died in the basement of the family home. She did not deny killing them but pleaded not guilty. Her lawyers argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a serious mental illness, and was not responsible for her actions. Expert witnesses supported this claim and also described her suicide attempt. The trial received wide attention across the United States because it raised questions about mental health after childbirth. During deliberations, police arrested a person who was allegedly filming jurors outside the courthouse.
