Josh Kerr breaks men's mile world record in London

British runner Josh Kerr broke the men's mile world record in London on Saturday. He ran the distance in 3 minutes 42.66 seconds. This beat the previous record of 3:43.13, which Hicham El Guerrouj set in Rome in 1999. That record had lasted 27 years.

Kerr, who is 28 and from Edinburgh, won the race at London Stadium in front of 60,000 fans. He finished more than three seconds ahead of second-place Yared Nuguse. Back in March, Kerr had said publicly that he wanted to break the record at this event.

The mile is one of track and field's most famous events. Kerr has won five global medals and an Olympic silver medal during his career.
