Japan food prices rise for 4,923 items in September

Teikoku Databank says nearly 5,000 food and drink products in Japan will get more expensive in September 2026. The figure covers items from 195 large manufacturers. It is about three times higher than September 2025, and it is the biggest monthly total for price rises in 2026. Seasonings make up the largest group, with almost 2,000 items affected. Processed foods account for roughly 1,850 more. For the full year, over 19,000 items have already confirmed price increases, and the annual total is expected to pass 20,000 for the second year running. Companies say the main reasons are higher oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, a weak yen, and rising transport costs. These factors have pushed up the price of imported ingredients and delivery.
