Italian court sentences motorway executive for Genoa bridge collapse

An Italian court has sentenced Giovanni Castellucci to 12 years in prison for his role in the Morandi bridge disaster. The bridge collapsed near Genoa on 14 August 2018, killing 43 people. Castellucci was the head of Autostrade per l'Italia, the company that operated the motorway. The court found him guilty of vehicular homicide and negligence. During the collapse, vehicles fell onto warehouses and a riverbed below. Around 57 people faced trial in connection with the disaster. About 400 people were in the courtroom, including relatives of victims. Castellucci was not present to hear the verdict. He is already serving a six-year sentence for a separate fatal incident on a southern Italian viaduct in 2013.
