Israeli military admits firing on car that killed five-year-old girl

The Israeli military has admitted that its soldiers fired on a car in Gaza City on 29 January 2024, killing a five-year-old girl named Hind Rajab. The admission came in August 2026, nearly two years after the military first denied any involvement.

Five of Hind's family members died when the tank opened fire. Hind and her cousin Layan survived at first. Hind called the Palestine Red Crescent for help during the attack. A rescue ambulance was sent, but its crew were also killed. Hind's body was later found in the car, which had been hit by around 335 bullets.

The Israeli military has now opened a criminal investigation. It says there were failures in how the ambulance rescue was handled.
