Iranian hackers attack multiple U.S. water systems in coordinated campaign

Iranian-linked hackers have attacked water systems across the United States, federal officials have confirmed. The FBI, EPA, and CISA released a joint warning about the attacks. A group called CyberAv3ngers, connected to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, carried out at least one attack on a water facility in Pittsburgh in 2023. In Minnesota, hackers hit more than 30 water plants, forcing some to switch to manual operation. The EPA says many American water systems have serious security weaknesses, including old software and poor access controls. Officials warn that these attacks are continuing and that water systems remain a target alongside energy and government facilities.
