IndyCar race held on Washington DC streets near national monuments

Washington DC hosted its first ever IndyCar race on Sunday, organised by President Trump. The race took place on a street circuit around the National Mall. Pennsylvania Avenue was the longest straight, where cars reached nearly 200 mph. The circuit was about 1.7 miles long.

Trump had signed an executive order in January telling federal agencies and the DC mayor's office to make the race happen. Workers welded over 200 manhole covers to the streets so the cars would not disturb them. Military planes, including a B-2 stealth bomber, flew over the circuit, and nearby Ronald Reagan airport stopped flights for three hours. A trained bald eagle was released close to the start line. The race was part of celebrations for America's 250th birthday.
