India's education minister resigns after student-led protest campaign

India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after weeks of protests demanding his removal. The protests were led by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth movement organised largely through social media. Demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi from June onwards. They were angry about leaked exam questions in the NEET medical school entrance test, which affects over two million students. On Monday, police used batons and tear gas against protesters, injuring dozens. After the resignation, the government also released arrested protesters and agreed to pay compensation to families of students who died by suicide following the scandal. The Cockroach Janta Party said all their demands had been met. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called for an apology from Prime Minister Modi over the police response.
