Immigration officer kills motorist during enforcement operation in Maine

An ICE officer shot and killed a 25-year-old man in Biddeford, Maine on July 13 during an immigration enforcement operation. The victim, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was a Colombian national who had legal permission to work in the United States. He lived in Biddeford with his wife and daughter. The Department of Homeland Security said the officer fired because he feared for public safety, and the officer has claimed self-defense. The officer later contacted the family directly to say he had killed Durán Guerrero. DHS has opened an investigation but has shared little information publicly. About 200 people attended a public forum where the family and Democratic members of Congress demanded answers. This was at least the ninth death linked to ICE operations since the current immigration crackdown began.
