ICE agent released from Texas jail after extradition fight fails

Christian Castro, an ICE agent facing criminal charges in Minnesota, walked free from a Texas jail early Thursday morning. Castro had been held in Brownsville since his arrest on May 29. Minnesota wanted him extradited for allegedly shooting a Venezuelan immigrant during an ICE operation in January and then lying about what happened. A federal judge ruled he had no legal power to keep Castro in custody or force Texas Governor Greg Abbott to sign an extradition order. Under Texas law, Castro had to be released after 90 days without formal extradition. Minnesota's attorney general tried to block the release but the judge refused. Officials in Minnesota worry that Castro could cross into Mexico, because Brownsville sits directly on the border.
