Hudson's Bay completes final art auction, raising 9.5 million dollars total

Hudson's Bay completed the final sale in its art auction series in May 2026, raising a total of $9.5 million across all eight sales. The Canadian department store chain closed earlier and needed to sell around 4,400 artworks and objects to pay its debts. The last auction, run online by Heffel Fine Art Auction House, featured six works connected to the Indigenous Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau. Three were painted by Morrisseau himself, and three came from his studio. The most expensive Morrisseau piece sold for $27,500, while the top price overall went to a portrait of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, which fetched $50,000. Authentication of Morrisseau's work remains difficult. Since his death in 2007, around 6,000 fake paintings attributed to him have been identified.
