Hospital data shows rising e-scooter injuries among children in recent years

Hospitals in England have recorded a sharp rise in children hurt while riding e-scooters. Three trauma centres in Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield treated 477 children under 16 between 2019 and 2024. Cases grew from fewer than 10 in 2019 to nearly 150 in 2024. A larger study found 2,117 injuries in that period, and more than 40% happened in 2024 alone. Boys made up about 70% of cases. Children aged 11 to 14 were injured most often. The most common cause was simply falling off the scooter. Collisions with vehicles caused 11% of injuries and tended to be more serious. Arms, legs, and heads were most frequently hurt. Around 8% of children needed a hospital stay.
