Hong Kong court sentences three democracy activists to prison

A Hong Kong court has sentenced three pro-democracy activists to prison for organising annual memorial events for the 1989 Tiananmen Square killings. Lee Cheuk-yan, 69, received seven years. Chow Hang-tung, 41, got seven years and three months. Albert Ho, 74, was given five years and two months after pleading guilty. Lee and Chow were convicted of inciting subversion under Hong Kong's national security law, which Beijing introduced in 2020. The court said the activists broke China's constitution because they called for an end to one-party rule. The three had organised yearly gatherings in Victoria Park through a group called the Hong Kong Alliance. The United Nations and several foreign governments have criticised the sentences.
