Hong Kong court convicts Wall Street Journal publisher over union deterrence

A Hong Kong court has found Dow Jones guilty of trying to stop a journalist from joining a union. The company publishes The Wall Street Journal. The court ruled that a supervisor told reporter Selina Cheng that her union role was a problem and was incompatible with her job. This broke employment law. However, the court cleared Dow Jones of a second charge. The judge found enough reasonable doubt about why the company fired Cheng. Cheng was dismissed in July 2024 after she became chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association. The company said it let her go because it was moving its Asia office from Hong Kong to Singapore. Cheng brought the case herself as a private prosecution.
