HMRC files bankruptcy petition against former Liverpool defender Carragher

HM Revenue and Customs filed a bankruptcy petition against former footballer Jamie Carragher on 26 August 2026. The petition was over an unpaid tax bill, reported to be between £700,000 and £800,000. Carragher, who is 48, played for Liverpool from 1996 to 2013 and now works as a TV football pundit on Sky Sports and CBS Sports. He appeared at the High Court the following day without a lawyer. A spokesperson said the tax problem should have been dealt with earlier, but that steps were being taken to pay the bill very soon. It is important to note that a bankruptcy petition does not mean Carragher has been declared bankrupt. Carragher is currently a director of five companies, one of which is in liquidation.
