Heavy rainfall triggers deadly landslide in South Korean city

A landslide killed one person and injured two others in Geoje, South Korea, early on Monday. Heavy rain caused the landslide, which buried the first floor of an apartment building at around 4:30 a.m. Rescue workers pulled three people from the building.

Geoje received more than 400mm of rain between Sunday and Monday. In just one hour, 124.5mm fell, the highest hourly amount recorded since 1972. Some parts of South Gyeongsang Province saw nearly 800mm over three days.

The extreme rain also caused landslides that blocked major roads. One person was rescued after a separate landslide in the nearby city of Tongyeong. Hundreds of residents had to leave their homes because of flooding. The region had suffered weeks of drought before the storms arrived.
