Heavy rainfall floods Japan's Chiba prefecture, kills multiple people

Heavy rain killed at least four people in Chiba prefecture, near Tokyo, on Thursday. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest emergency warning for rain and landslides. It was the first time this warning had been used in Chiba. More than 360mm of rain fell in 24 hours in some areas. The agency described the rainfall as unprecedented. Around 7,000 travellers were stranded at Narita airport overnight because rail services and major roads were closed. Power was cut to about 20,000 households. Authorities ordered more than 100,000 people to evacuate their homes. Among those who died was a woman found trapped in a car that had gone underwater. The flooding happened during one of Japan's busiest holiday periods.
