Health workers strike over unpaid wages during Congo Ebola outbreak

Health workers at Ebola treatment centres in the Democratic Republic of Congo have gone on strike. They are demanding two months of unpaid wages and bonuses. The strikes happened at several centres in Ituri province, which has nearly 90 percent of all confirmed cases. Congo is fighting one of the worst Ebola outbreaks ever recorded. The country declared a public health emergency in May. The outbreak has been growing faster than health teams can control it. More than 100 health workers have caught Ebola since the outbreak began. The strikes have made containment efforts even harder. Congo's Prime Minister Judith Suminwa visited major treatment centres to see the situation herself. Confirmed cases have reached nearly 3,000, with more than 1,300 deaths.
