Glacier collapse triggers deadly flash flood near Nepal-Tibet border

A large piece of glacier broke off in the Himalayas on Wednesday and fell into a valley, causing a massive flood. The water, around 70 feet high, destroyed several villages near the Nepal-Tibet border. At least 359 people have died, and more than 1,300 are still missing.

Among the missing are 644 tourists from several countries. These include 47 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 British nationals, and 24 Canadians. Two of the British missing are children aged 13 and 14. More than 40 survivors are receiving hospital treatment.

The area is popular with Hindu pilgrims visiting sacred sites, and the flood happened during the busiest time of year. The UK government has promised £5 million to help Nepal with rescue and recovery.
