Glacial collapse triggers deadly flash floods on Nepal-Tibet border

A glacier collapsed on the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, sending a massive wave of mud and rock into a river. The flood destroyed villages, bridges, and roads in the Rasuwa district, north of Kathmandu. At least 160 people have been confirmed dead, and hundreds more are missing. Some reports put the number of missing as high as 1,400. Foreign nationals, including Americans and Canadians, are among those unaccounted for. Nepal has sent 14 helicopters and rescue teams to the area. A US geological agency confirmed that a glacial collapse caused the flooding. Scientists say that warming temperatures in the Himalayas have made glacial collapses more likely. Authorities have warned that the death toll will probably rise.
