Genetically modified pig kidney transplant survives nine months in patient

A man in New Hampshire received a pig kidney transplant that worked for 271 days, the longest any animal organ has survived in a human. Tim Andrews, 67, had the operation at Massachusetts General Hospital. The pig's genes were edited so that Andrews's body would not reject the organ. When the kidney eventually stopped working, doctors gave him a human kidney at the same hospital. The previous record was 130 days, set by a woman in Alabama earlier the same year. More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for an organ transplant, and thousands die each year before a match is found. A second patient in the study has also received a pig kidney and is doing well.
