Gardner planning commission recommends rezoning for entertainment district

Gardner's planning commission voted on August 24 to recommend approval of a large new entertainment and education district. The project, called Velocity Arts, would cover 335 acres in southwest Johnson County, Kansas. It is valued at $1.5 billion and would include an amphitheater, a music and media school, and spaces for hospitality and recreation. The design comes from Kansas City architect firm Populous. Before any final decision, the Johnson County Airport Commission and Board of Commissioners must also review the plan. The Gardner City Council will then vote on September 21, 2026. Some residents living nearby have raised concerns about traffic, because local roads are already busy. City leaders, however, believe the project will bring strong economic benefits to the area.
