Former US Marine released from Russian prison after four years

Robert Gilman, a 32-year-old former US Marine, has been freed from a Russian prison after more than four years in custody. Russian authorities arrested him in 2022 and convicted him of attacking a police officer. His original sentence was three and a half years, but it was later increased to ten years.

Before his release, Gilman's health had become critical. He had been unresponsive for around 50 days and was being fed through a tube in a hospital bed. Doctors described his condition as life-threatening.

President Trump announced the release and said he had spoken with President Putin about the case. Russian officials called it a humanitarian gesture. Gilman has now been taken to a US military hospital in Texas for treatment.
