Former MP Ann Widdecombe found dead at Devon home

Ann Widdecombe, a former British MP and MEP, was found dead at her home in Devon on 9 July 2026. She was 78. Police said she had suffered serious injuries in what they described as a targeted attack.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder two days later at an address in South Yorkshire. At first, police said the death was not related to terrorism or politics. However, counter-terrorism officers took over the investigation shortly after. The man was then arrested again, this time on suspicion of planning or carrying out acts of terrorism. Under terrorism laws, he can be held for up to 14 days. An inquest is scheduled to open on 22 July at County Hall in Exeter.
