Flash floods kill hundreds at Nepal-Tibet border

A powerful flood has killed more than 150 people near the Nepal-Tibet border. The disaster struck on Wednesday when a glacier or avalanche collapsed, sending water and mud through villages in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Between 600 and 1,400 people are still missing. More than 500 of them are foreign tourists, including around 178 from India. About 34 to 35 Australians are also missing, among them two boys aged 11 and 14 and their parents. The flood started on the Tibetan side of the Bhote Koshi River. The area is popular with trekking groups from many countries. Rescue teams from several nations are now searching for survivors, but access to the region is very difficult.
