Flash flood sweeps through Grand Canyon campgrounds and trails

A flash flood hit Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday afternoon, killing one person and leaving around 15 others missing. The flooding struck the Bright Angel Canyon area, where many hikers and campers were caught without warning. By Sunday morning, rescuers had evacuated 62 people from the area. The floodwater was powerful enough to destroy footbridges over Bright Angel Creek and carry large boulders and metal structures into the Colorado River. Park officials closed the Black Bridge and Silver Bridge across the river. They also shut the North Kaibab Trail, Phantom Ranch, and Bright Angel Campground. The creek has grown wider because of the flood, and the landscape around it has changed considerably.
