Flash flood in Nepal kills hundreds near Tibet border

A massive flash flood hit the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal on August 26, killing between 157 and 177 people. Hundreds more are missing. The flood started when mud and rock collapsed into the river in the mountainous Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, near the border with Tibet. The fast-moving water destroyed villages, roads, bridges, and power stations. Among the missing are foreign nationals from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and Ukraine. Rescue teams are still searching the area, and authorities have warned that the death toll will likely rise. Rising water levels are also threatening communities along the border between Nepal and India, particularly in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
