FIFA president faces opposition after World Cup privatization scheme collapses

UEFA and other football confederations have moved to remove FIFA president Gianni Infantino from his role. The trouble started when Infantino tried to sell World Cup commercial rights to private investors for around £15 billion. The plan was kept secret, and many football bodies said it would not benefit the sport.

UEFA said it had lost confidence in Infantino's leadership. All 55 of its member nations said they would vote against him. UEFA told Infantino to resign or face a formal no-confidence vote. The North and Central American confederation also called for change, describing the plan as very poor leadership.

Even staff inside FIFA organised opposition to the scheme. A replacement candidate is now being sought, with support from several confederations.
