Ferry capsizes on Zimbabwe lake killing dozens of passengers

A passenger ferry sank on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, killing at least 44 people. Strong waves caused the boat to capsize. The ferry was approved to carry 90 passengers, but official ticket records show 114 adults were on board. One crew member said the total was 153 people, because children under ticketing age were not counted. At least 77 survivors were pulled from the water. The captain was among those who died. The ferry ran regular trips between the town of Kariba and nearby islands and fishing camps, a journey that usually takes five hours. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the incident a state of disaster, which allows the government to bring in emergency resources more quickly.
