Ferry capsizes off northern Cyprus killing at least seven people

A passenger ferry sank off northern Cyprus on Sunday, killing at least seven people. The vessel was travelling from Kyrenia to Tasucu, a port in Turkey, when it went down. Around 267 people were on board, and rescuers pulled approximately 237 to safety. Twenty-three people are still missing. Some survivors said they heard an explosion at the front of the ship before it rolled over. They also reported that there were not enough life vests for everyone. The ferry, a high-speed catamaran built in 2000, now lies 514 metres below the surface. Authorities have arrested the captain and all seven crew members. The disaster has raised serious concerns about safety standards on ferries operating between northern Cyprus and Turkey.
