Federal judge invalidates Trump immigration visa restrictions for multiple countries

A federal judge struck down several Trump administration immigration policies on June 5. The policies had stopped visa processing for people from 39 countries and paused asylum decisions. The judge ruled that the administration had gone beyond its legal powers. He also found that the policies unfairly targeted immigrants from specific countries. As a result, the government must now process hundreds of thousands of applications that were on hold. Four separate policies were cancelled by the ruling. However, the decision did not affect a State Department pause on immigrant visas covering 75 countries. It also did not change the existing travel ban for nationals of the 39 countries. Legal challenges to Trump immigration policies are continuing in New York and Washington D.C.
