FBI investigates water utility software company breach in Kansas

The FBI is investigating a cyberattack on Micro-Comm, a Kansas company that makes technology for water utilities. The company found the breach on July 31. A ransomware group called Barracuda has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The breach happened during a wave of cyberattacks on water systems across at least seven states in late July. Those attacks targeted control devices used in water plants. Experts linked that broader campaign to a group connected to Iran, but the Micro-Comm attack was separate.

The FBI's Kansas City office has spoken with Micro-Comm and is working with other law enforcement agencies. The incidents have raised concerns because water suppliers and their technology vendors face threats from more than one source.
