Extreme heat warning extended through Friday evening in Northeast Ohio

The National Weather Service extended an extreme heat warning for Northeast Ohio, including Cleveland, until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026. Forecasters added an extra day to the warning after conditions lasted longer than expected.

Temperatures were predicted to reach the low to mid-90s, but the heat would feel much worse due to humidity. The heat index, which measures how hot the air actually feels, was forecast to hit between 100 and 108 degrees in some locations.

Overnight temperatures were expected to stay in the mid to upper 70s, giving residents little chance to cool down. A large heat dome had settled over a wide area stretching from Kansas to New England. Thunderstorms were likely to develop on Friday afternoon as the system began to weaken.
