European Union convenes emergency meeting on mass migration into Ceuta

The European Union has called an emergency meeting of interior ministers for Tuesday to discuss a migration crisis at Ceuta, a small Spanish territory in North Africa. Around 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco, and at least 67 people died during the crossing. Twenty-two EU countries signed a joint letter asking for stronger border controls and a shared response. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said some member states had acted selfishly and broken EU rules. Italy's foreign minister blamed a Spanish policy that gave legal status to migrants, saying it encouraged people smugglers. Spain's interior minister said most migrants have now left Ceuta and the situation is close to normal. A smaller crisis team will meet on Saturday before the full ministerial meeting.
