Engine failure causes window to shatter on Ryanair flight from Greece

A passenger was nearly pulled out of a plane window during takeoff from Thessaloniki, Greece, on 10 July. A blade inside the right engine of the Ryanair Boeing 737-800 broke apart, sending pieces through the side of the aircraft. The debris shattered a window in row 11. A 61-year-old Serbian man sitting there was pulled outward, with his head and shoulders outside the plane. His wife and other passengers grabbed him and pulled him back inside. His seatbelt also helped keep him from falling. He suffered neck and shoulder injuries and lost consciousness several times. Oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling as the cabin lost pressure quickly. Investigators found bird remains inside the engine but have not confirmed a bird strike caused the blade to fail.
