Energy experts recommend thermostat settings to reduce cooling costs during heat wave

Energy experts and utility companies in the United States gave conservation advice to residents during a severe heat wave that hit the East Coast, South, and Midwest over the July Fourth weekend.

Officials in New York asked people to use less electricity because high demand was putting pressure on the power grid, raising the risk of outages.

Experts suggested keeping thermostats at 78 degrees Fahrenheit at home, which can cut cooling costs by around 12 percent. Running washing machines and dishwashers in the early morning or late evening also helps reduce strain on the grid during peak hours.
