Elderly Virginia councilman builds sidewalks in neglected neighborhood

A video of Gary Miller, a 78-year-old city councillor from Danville, Virginia, went viral in July 2026, collecting over four million views on TikTok and X. Miller, who also works as a cardiologist, spent four years pushing for new pavements along Kemper Road, a street in a predominantly Black neighbourhood that had long been neglected by local government. His concern was straightforward: pedestrians, including children, had to cross a dangerous road to reach the nearest grocery store. Online viewers responded warmly to his no-nonsense style, which felt different from typical political communication. Many comments also mentioned his high-waisted trousers. The attention he received reflected a wider public frustration with governments that fail to deliver even basic infrastructure improvements. The Kemper Road pavements have now been built.
