Earthquake in western Colombia kills over 100 people

A powerful earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday morning, killing at least 111 people. The quake measured 7.4 in magnitude and struck near San José del Palmar on the Pacific coast shortly after 7:30 a.m. Many buildings collapsed across the region, and dozens more people were injured. The shaking was felt in Bogotá, about 150 miles away, and also in Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. Several cities were badly affected, including Cali, Pereira, and Quibdo. The Colombian Geological Service said it was the strongest earthquake to hit the country in ten years. Multiple aftershocks followed the main quake. Colombia sits in a tectonically active area, so earthquakes are not unusual there.
